By now, if you went to college, you’ll be out and in the real world. Some, like doctors and those working on their masters, might still be going to school. But for the rest of us, it’s spread your wings and fly.
It can be scary going on job interviews, and waiting for a call on a sent resume. But as I shared with my kids when they were young, “fear is not knowing what to expect.” - For example a haunted house. If you go through one the first time, you will be scared. Why? The unknown, of what will come at you and when. But if you go through that haunted house 10 times, you won’t be afraid. You know exactly what will happen and when.
So, whether this is your first real job search, or you might be planning to leave a job, or you have been fired from the one you had, here is something that might help you.
First, consider what you really like, and investigate if there are any kind of jobs out there with descriptions matching what you would like to work with. Even if none are announced, you might be able to find one anyway. Working with something you like will not only make you do a better job, but you will also stand a better chance of being promoted later on.
Second, research the companies that are doing what you would like to do and decide which of them you would most like to work for. Make a priority list from one to however many you would like to know more about.
Third, call them and find out who in the companies are responsible for the hiring. Even if they say they are not hiring, don’t let that discourage you. Just tell them that you are looking for information on what kind of education they prefer their employees to have and to learn about their company politics.
Note: Whatever it is, a personnel manager, or the owner of the business you talk to, always count on they are very busy. First ask for a couple of minutes of their time or if you can call them on a more convenient hour.
A lot of people are proud of their business and like to talk about it. Being a good listener and showing an honest interest in and admiration of their achievements will gain you their sympathy, and if you ask for their advice on how to get into their line of business, you will probably get it, and maybe even get some leads.
